Long-Term Maintenance Items for S62 (M5-e39) Engine:
In addition to sensor replacements, it is also a good idea to consider the following items if you want your engine to last. A well-maintained S62 (M5-e39) engine should be able to last for over 200,000 miles, and possibly much more, without a major rebuild.
Things to Consider: - Replace Main Bearings every 100,000 miles (75,000 miles would be safer)
- Replace Rod Bearings every 100,000 miles (75,000 miles would be safer)
- Carbon Build-Up (CBU) on the heads occurs over time. Cleaning the carbon build-up in the old heads or getting new heads is a big job. Cleaning out the carbon deposits from the secondary air system may help.
- Replace Fan Clutch every 50,000 miles (if loose)
- Replace Hoses every 100,000 miles.
Please note that the items listed above are preventative, and if not attended to, much more significant damage to the engine can possibly occur. Tending to the above is something that each M5 owner needs to decide to do or not to do, based on their own level of risk aversity. Some M5 (e39) engines fail at 40,000 miles while others are strong at 130,000 miles. The more aggressively you drive your M5 (e.g. the more you hit the RPM redline), the higher the probability that something will go wrong sooner than later.
To get some perspective on the costs involved in reparing major engine damage, here are some numbers to ponder. A new S62 engine costs US$23,000 (before labor). Rebuilding the S62 engine due damage caused by worn rod bearings can cost US$12,000. Cleaning the carbon build-up can cost US$9,000.
